Use a Waste Disposal Service: Waste disposal companies are private businesses that specialize in disposing of garbage that people may not be able to throw away in the regular trash. Many professional, private waste removal companies provide mattress hauling as one of their services.
California residents can drop off their old mattresses and box springs at no-cost at a participating collection site or event. Unit limits vary by location and a residency restrictions may apply. We recommend contacting the location prior to drop-off.
This week we introduced changes in our in-store recycling program that allow us to continue to provide this service for our customers. We are now charging customers $25 for each TV and computer monitor they recycle at our stores.
The Swedish retailer told us all furniture stores are required under California law to charge the $10.50 recycling fee to anyone who buys a mattress. That law, the California Used Mattress Recovery and Recycling Act, took effect last year.
Cutting up the mattress and box spring parts is best done outside. You’ll avoid a huge mess from the cotton, foam, and wood frame. Get a helper or some people to assist you with removing the mattress from your home. If you must cut up the mattress parts in your home, lay down heavy tarps first.
Drop your mattress topper off at a recycling center.
Throwing your foam topper into the garbage can be detrimental to the environment. Instead, find local recycling centers and ask them to point you in the direction of recycling programs and dropoff sites for memory foam.
In California, retailers charge consumers an advance recycling fee (ARF) of $8-25 when they purchase covered electronics, which goes into a fund to pay for the collection and recycling of devices. The ARF enables consumers to recycle end of life electronic devices for free.

Ikea is no exception, giving its customers the chance to pay for mattress recycling at checkout.
Ikea customers in the UK can sell their unwanted Ikea furniture back. The scheme launched in May 2021, after being delayed from Black Friday on 27th November 2020.
